About DetachPipe Attachments.txt

I have been evaluating DetachPipe (amongst others) and am virtually sold on the product but have one small problem that you may be able to help with.

I use X1 Desktop search for finding and locating emails and attachments. This has columns that show "From", "To", "Subject" and "Attachment name" etc. I believe that other search programs such as Copernic do the same.

When searching for an email it is very quick and easy to scan down the attachment name column to find what one is looking for. Unfortunately, once an attachment has been removed by DetachPipe this information is no longer available and the name of each attachment is shown as "About DetachPipe Attachments.txt" Obviously one can look at the text of the message to find the name of the attachment but this defeats the point of the Desktop search.

I therefore wondered if it was possible to for the text file that you use to replace the attachment to be named [file name of the attachment].txt rather than [About DetachPipe Attachments].txt as it is now.

Yes - we can certainly do that. e.g. if the original was called
hello.doc
we could call our text file
hello.doc.DETACHED

What would you expect to happen for multiple attachments? One for each?

hello.doc.detached would be perfect but you could use hello.doc.txt if that was simpler. The advantage of the former is that it would be immediately obvious that the file has been detached but you would probably need to create a file association for ".detached" as a text file so your "About Detached attachments..." message could be opened and read in Outlook. Using a ".txt extension would not be as neat but avoid the need to create a file association.

If you could achieve this I have a number of clients who would also be very interested in DetachPipe.

Yes - we planned to create a file association - this is the best way I believe.

It will take a little longer than planned, because first we need to get a fix out for a timing issue in 5.8.9. This seemingly change will actually take a lot of work and testing, so please bear with us.

Many thanks for the Beta which I have just been testing. I am happy to say that so far the attach and detach functions seem to be working perfectly. The changes have also solved the problem with X1 Desktop Search.

There are just a couple of other points that I have found that you might like to look at:

The first is the "Forward" function. I have selected the "Check forwarded emails for attachments to send" on the General Settings page and was rather expecting the attachments to be reinstated and and the link removed on the forwarded copy. This doesn't seem to happen.

The second is whether if one moves (or indeed copies) an email, which has had an attachment removed, from one folder to another the links and attachment folder should update themselves. I appreciate that this might be slightly complicated but it would certainly be the icing on the cake.

If I find anything else I will let you know.
