Excel Pipe fails to open password protected spreadsheets

Postby stormcrow27 » Thu Apr 15, 2010 4:54 am

Good afternoon. I'm trying to use the latest version of ExcelPipe to replace links on several Excel spreadsheets. These spreadsheets are located on a Sharepoint 2007 Server document library, and the cells are password locked to prevent changing the forumla as well as the links to other spreadsheets. Whenever ExcelPipe inovkes Excel to replace the links, it generates a RPC call error, number 82 from Excel Pipe. The links and the spreadsheets change monthly, so ExcelPipe would be an excellent solution to use if it didn't generate this error.

Version of Excel 2007 with Office SP 2.

Sincerely,
Jeremy Ward

How are you specifying the path to the Sharepoint Server? Please provide the exact text

That's not a UNC path - you need to provide the UNC path to the sharepoint server.

Sorry, I flipped the backslashes around. I still receive the same error message.

It doesn't look like a UNC name. It looks like you're trying to use a URL with UNC syntax.

Is portaltest.domainname.com a UNC share on your computer?

Yes it is. It's also the URL of the Sharepoint portal. I have it mapped in Windows Explorer to go straight to the site. For some additional information, Excelpipe does find the Excel files using this UNC path. It just failes to invoke Excel properly to edit and update the links.

Ok - do you have MS Excel loaded on your current machine? What version is it?

Could you please atatach your ExcelPipe settings and a sample file (or email them to us)?

Excel 2007, Service Pack 2 for Office. The webserver keeps blockigng the epp attachments from Excel pipe when I attach them to this post. The excel files I'm using for testing are confidential data, so I can't attach or email them due to security reasons.

Please attach as .zip. The .epp is non-secure. Can you remove the sensitive data and still reproduce the problem for us? I am sure it is just a settings issue. Can you please email these to us - and a screenshot of the error will help too.

Looking forward to helping you.

Unfortunately, my trial ran out, so I can't get Excel pipe to reproduce the error without some sort of extension. However, I can summarize the error.

On the search and replace screen, after Excelpipe lists the files it finds in the directory, and launches Excel to change the links, it reports an error code 12 RPC failed to launch, and then Excel fails to open. This happens on each Excel file.

I've attached the epp files as a zip to this post. Thanks for your help.

If you send an email to support we can send you an extension.

First try opening task manager (ctrl+alt+del), look for excel.exe in the task list. If it is, kill all copies and try again.

If that doesn't work, please re-install Microsoft Excel. An RPC error indicates that it cannot connect to MS Excel - either because it was never installed, or (more likely) the installation is corrupted.

You're not running on a virtual server are you...? e.g. Citrix etc where other people can be running Excel on the same CPU?

No, Excel is installed locally. I've killed the excel.exe processes when the RPC error appears, and it still has the same issue. Excel doesn't have any problems opening the files normally, just when it's prompted by Excelpipe. I've reinstalled Excel and it has the same problem. I'll email support for an extension.
