Archived Outlook emails

I couldn't find any information on how to handle archived email attachments. I presume it would entail the same procedure?

Also, I have the archive configured to delete emails after 6 months...will detached files be deleted along with the emails? Is there an on/off option for this action? It's the only way to manage outlook and avoid bloated files over time.

Hi Peter,

Yes, Archived emails can be detached in the same way.

I suspect that the attachments for archived emails will not be removed as they are stored to the archive PST's Deleted Items folder rather than the main PST's Deleted Items. I will check on this because it needs to be handled.

I have emails older than 1 year configured to be deleted from the archive, including emails in the “deleted items” folder. Any associated files should also be deleted.

Basically, I want detachpipe to delete detached attachments as emails are being removed/deleted from the archive file, including emails being deleted from the archive’s “deleted items” folder.

This is the only way to automate management of pst files. Let me know please.

It will be done - but currently DetachPipe only monitors the main PST file's Deleted Items folder, not that of the Archive folder as well.

How Does DetachPipe Work with Archives?

Let me explain how I Archive email messages. Then I hope you can explain how DetachPipe might help out.

I currently save all messages incoming messages for 1 year, and save all SENT messages for 6 months. I also store messages in about 100 separate folders, but in the last year, I've found this to be unnecessary, so that I currently only use about 10-15 separate folders. I am leaving the other 85 or so folders out there--I'm not going to reorganize them.

I have all messages that are older than 1 year (and SENT messages older than 6 months) automatically get archived to my archive.pst account. My outlook.pst is about 1.5GB and my archive.pst is 1.95GB. I rarely delete email messages from the archive.pst--I just leave them there. I always have the archive.pst open in Outlook. I use the x1 desktop search engine and find myself regularly searching and opening emails from over a year old.

This is how I'd like DetachPipe to work, but I'm not sure it works this way:

1. All incoming messages will automatically detach attachments (to \My Documents\DetachPipe\Inbox)
2. After a year has passed, the messages will be archived from outlook.pst and transfer to archive.pst.
3. I would like either (a) the detached attachments to get reattached to the messages at the time they transfer to archive.pst, or (b) the detahced attachments transfer to the directory \My Documents\DetachPipe\Archive\Inbox (note it is stored in a special "archive" folder).

I woud like this to work automatically Fron the little I have read and played with the product, I don't think this is possible. I think that the automatic detachment will leave the attachments in my file system forever unless the email is deleted (rather than archived), or unless I delete the detached attachments from the file system, manually. Do I understand how your product works or am I mistaken?

One other question, please: When exactly does the delete attachment work? I tried deleting one email, then I noticed that the detached attachment was still there in the directly. Can you explain how the timing of the delete detachment functionality works?

Hi Ed,

Your option 3)b) could work, because we could get DetachPipe to re-attach the attachments prior to a move, and then detach them after a move. However you'd need to use the same file mask settings for the main PST as for your Archive PST e.g.
\My Documents\DetachPipe\Personal Folders\Inbox
\My Documents\DetachPipe\Archive\Inbox.

This can be done using the mask

Would that work for you?

Attachments are normally deleted immediately, but if more than one attachment points to the same detached file then it will only get deleted when the last remaining email pointing to it is deleted.
