seperating names

Postby nixonron » Wed Aug 27, 2003 3:04 am

I have a database filed with names from a court docket with name like
Nixon Ron v. Dole, Robert. I want to seperate the two into seperate fields. Can you do this with datapipe. Or can I use TextPipe to do the job?

Ron

Hi Ron,

The first step is to create a copy of the database column - one for the left name, one for the right name. Then write two TextPipe filters for DataPipe - one to retain the left name, and one to retain the right name (before and after the ' v ' respectively).

SQL could do it as well....

I'm an absolute avid fan of TEXTPIPE and Datapipe, however, this particular challenge, I'd attack with SQL:

Select
LTRIM(RTRIM(Left(Column_X, (Charindex('v.', Column_X))) as NIXON_RON,
LTRIM(RTRIM(Right(Column_X, Len(Column_X) - Charindex(' v. ', Column_x)))) as DOLE_ROBERT
From Table_Full_o_Data
